106)6-4. 英和辞典は捨てなさい

私は松本亨先生の信奉者です。したがって松本先生が本に書かれていることや、松本先生の方法で勉強してきた先生方に「こうやりなさい」と言われたことは素直に実行してきました。そして英英辞典を使うということは、やってきて良かったと思うことの一つです。

結局これはやった人しか、わからないと思います。私達の学校の生徒さんは、みんな英英辞典を使っています。最初は苦労する人も多いですが、最終的には英英辞典を国語辞典のように使いこなせるようになっています。

前回も書きましたが英英辞典を使えるかどうかは慣れの問題です。決心して始めればそんなに難しいことではありません。

松本先生は「英和辞典は捨てなさい」とまで言っています。手元に英和辞典が無くなれば英英辞典を使うしかなくなるからです。

参考までに松本亨先生の書いた「私がすすめる英書の読み方」の中で先生が「英和辞典を捨てなさい」と書いている部分をご紹介したいと思います。信じられると思われる方は実行してみたら良いと思います

 I own one big English-Japanese dictionary today, but I do not use it to look up the Japanese meaning of English words. I use it to look up Japanese words. 　

Throwing away your English-Japanese dictionaries is only the beginning. But it is a good beginning and an important step toward a new way of reading. It means that when you come across a new word you will look it up in an English dictionary.

When you do this for a period of time, you will begin to think of the meaning of English words in English. The significance of this fact is that your brain has begun to work in English.

Remember, your brain is made up of billions of minute cells. And some of your brain cells can now operate in English instead of Japanese.
